When introducing the first section of the Literature Circle, begin by asking students to get out their paper and eldnirf in order to get started. Students will have to infer what you are referring. The teacher will continue to repeat the sentence and use motions, pointing, etc in order to get the students to understand what eldnirf means.
Once most of the students have caught on to the meaning of the new word, have students look around the classroom and invent new words for objects that they see. Students will then share their words with the class by putting it into a sentence. The rest of the class members will have to guess what the new word is referring to. Teachers may want to give the class the opportunity to illustrate their word, define it, and publish it onto a “dictionary” page.
At the
end of reading Frindle, students will have made a class dictionary with
new words that they invent. These words will be published to be used
in connection with the next book in the unit. As a means of incorporating
the concept of publishing a newspaper, as described in The Landry News,
students will use these words in articles that they write to be published
in the class newspaper.
